The Scanlonville Praise House Parklet will stand as a meaningful tribute to one of Mount Pleasant’s oldest African American communities — and the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor (SCNHC) is proud to be playing a role in helping bring this vision to life.
Located in the historic Scanlonville community, the parklet will honor the cultural and spiritual significance of praise houses in Gullah Geechee history. These small, community-centered structures served as gathering places rooted in faith, resilience, and connection — values that continue to shape the Lowcountry today and will be reflected in this future space.
SCNHC’s Role in Preservation & Placemaking
As part of its mission to preserve, promote, and protect South Carolina’s cultural heritage, SCNHC is supporting the development of this interpretive space, helping ensure that the stories of Scanlonville will be honored and shared with future generations.
Heritage Interpretation — The parklet will incorporate educational elements highlighting the origins of Scanlonville, the role of praise houses within the community, and the broader significance of Gullah Geechee culture in South Carolina’s story.
Community-Centered Investment — By supporting projects like this, SCNHC will continue strengthening locally driven preservation efforts that celebrate authentic community narratives.
Preserving Sense of Place — The parklet will enhance public space while maintaining the historic integrity and cultural importance of the site, ensuring that growth and development do not overshadow heritage.

A Lasting Impact
Through partnership with the Town of Mount Pleasant and community stakeholders, this project will reflect the power of collaboration in heritage conservation. Once completed, the Scanlonville Praise House Parklet will be more than a public space — it will serve as a place of reflection, remembrance, and education.
SCNHC remains committed to supporting initiatives that uplift South Carolina’s historic communities and safeguard the stories that define our state!
